What happened to our Discord server

Unfortunately, we had a breach in the security of one of our moderators today. This resulted in chaos in the Stepcraft Discord server. Now that things have stabilized again, we want to quickly share an overview of what happened.

What happened?

The discord account of someone who moderates the Stepcraft Discord server was compromised. The people who compromised the account removed channels, members and messages, and changed permissions for the server. As a result, most channels from the server were deleted and are unfortunately lost, together with the history of messages in each of them.

This moderator luckily did not have access to sensitive information stored in our backend.

After investigating we can confirm that there was NO access to the following:

  • Our backend, which contains information about your in-game account.
  • Our Patreon account, which contains information about memberships.
  • E-mail lists, code, social accounts.

Based on our investigation, only the Discord account of the moderator was compromised, therefore any messages shared in the Discord server may have been accessible to the attackers.

What are we doing now?

First, we are in the process of setting up our Discord server again. We want to thank many of you who tried to help mitigate, and have been bringing the regular atmosphere back to the server.

At the same time, we have increased the security requirements on Discord for our team members and moderators. We added two new members to the moderating team (big thanks to Sneakerzz and Numismaster), to help us maintain round the clock coverage.

Finally, we are evaluating if there are any other improvements we can make to our security setup.

Looking forward

As a small gesture, for all of you that made it through the chaos, we will be adding a bundle of items that you can collect in the game. This will serve as a little "I was there" trophy. More info about this will follow in the Discord soon!
