Leaderboards in Stepcraft

How we make sure anyone can compete.

Part of the fun of Stepcraft is competing, with yourself and with other players. Pushing yourself to form healthy habits, encouraged by the game. And seeing how you stack up compared to others.

Allowing anyone to compete

As a first main way to compete, we have added leaderboards to the game. These allow you to see where you rank on amount of steps, and your level in different skills.

The risk with leaderboards like these is that they simply show who has been playing the game the longest. To give new players a chance to compete, we are also introducing weekly and monthly leaderboards. These, as the name suggests, reset at the start of every week and month.

Making it fun

We don't just want to show who got the most steps on each leaderboard. To make the leaderboards more fun, we are introducing unique categories that require you to play the game in a certain way to compete. For example, we are adding a category for the most items crafted, or the most damage dealt to enemies. These categories will be available as weekly and monthly leaderboards. We hope that these leaderboards encourage players to explore creative ways to compete.

We are planning to add more categories over time. If you have a fun idea for a category, let us know in Discord!

Getting rewarded

Of course you want to be able to show off your achievements. To do this, we are introducing cosmetic rewards for the top players on each leaderboard each week and month. We are still working on adding these to the game, but we hope to have them available soon.

Making sure leaderboards are fair

For some people, this competitive element may be a reason to try to game the system. We are keeping a close eye on things, it goes without saying that we will not tolerate cheating. We've set up several measures to prevent cheating, but will keep the details of these measures to ourselves, to make sure they are as effective as possible.
